As we transition into the fall season, now is the perfect time of year to break out your mixing bowls and baking sheets to make some delicious and healthy treats for your dog. These two easy recipes use minimal ingredients such as pumpkin, peanut butter, and bananas and happen to be plant-based!
Important Safety Note: Always ensure that any ingredients you’re baking with are safe for dogs. Don’t forget to check for the following things:
- Pumpkin Puree: Use 100% plain pumpkin puree, NOT pumpkin pie filling. Pie filling contains spices and sugar that can be harmful to dogs.
- Peanut Butter: Use natural, unsweetened and xylitol-free peanut butter. Xylitol is a sugar substitute that is highly toxic to dogs.
- Spices: Avoid using spices like nutmeg that can be toxic. A small amount of cinnamon or ginger is generally considered safe but should be used sparingly.
It’s always recommended to check with your veterinarian before introducing any new foods into your pet’s diet, especially if they have any current sensitivities. Treats should be given in moderation and are never a substitute for meals.
Here are some fall treat recipes your dog(s) are sure to love!
1. Three-Ingredient Pumpkin & Peanut Butter Biscuits 🎃🥜
This is a classic and incredibly simple recipe.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup pumpkin puree (100% plain)
- 1/2 cup natural peanut butter (make sure it’s xylitol-free)
- 2 cups whole wheat flour (or oat flour if you’re a gluten-free household)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, mix the pumpkin puree and peanut butter until well combined.
- Gradually add the flour and mix until a firm dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour.
- Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness on a lightly floured surface.
- Use a cookie cutter (fall shapes like pumpkins or leaves can be fun) or a knife to cut out shapes.
- Place the treats on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes or until they are firm and lightly golden.
- Let the treats cool completely before serving.
2. Pumpkin Banana Bites 🎃🍌
This recipe is even simpler and a great lower-fat option for pups with specific dietary needs.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup plain pumpkin puree
- 1 cup oats or oat flour
- 1 ripe banana, mashed
- 1 heaping tablespoon of ground flaxseed
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- In a bowl, mash the banana until smooth.
- Add the pumpkin puree and mix.
- In a separate bowl, combine the oats and ground flaxseed.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until combined.
- Form tablespoon-sized balls with your hands and flatten them into desired shapes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes. The outside will be firm, but the inside will be soft.
- Cool completely before serving.
Use this season as your chance to do some baking of your own, and show your dog you’re thinking of them too. These recipes are a fantastic way to bond with your dog and give them a healthy, homemade treat to celebrate the fall season!
